Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) recently inaugurated new buildings in four regional centres – Jodhpur, Aizawl, Rajkot, and Trivandrum – via an online ceremony held at Shastri Bhawan. The event was attended by K Sanjay Murthy, Secretary of Higher Education, and Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of School Education, from the Government of India.
During the inauguration, Mr. Murthy mentioned that these facilities at the regional centres would provide better access to higher education for young students in their respective states. He also praised IGNOU for its role in supporting the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 over the past three years.
Sanjay Kumar, the School Education Secretary, commended IGNOU for making quality education more accessible to marginalized communities.
In his welcome address, Prof. Nageshwar Rao, the Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, emphasized the importance of using educational technology in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online education, highlighting how it helps IGNOU reach those who might otherwise be left behind.
These new regional centres will play a crucial role in fulfilling the educational aspirations of disadvantaged communities, especially in rural areas, as well as benefitting SC, ST, OBC, and women, Prof. Rao added.
